How to Enjoy Italian Food in Italy While Taking Ozempic

Yes, you can eat pasta in Rome, sip wine in Tuscany, and stay on track!

Traveling through Italy while on Ozempic, Semaglutide, or Tirzepatide (like Wegovy or Mounjaro) doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the delicious food that makes Italy so unforgettable. As a travel advisor who travels with medication and helps others with health conditions do the same, I’m here to show you how to enjoy the best of Italian cuisine without overdoing it.

🍝 1. Embrace the Portion Sizes

In Italy, portions are naturally smaller than American-style servings. A pasta dish is typically a first course (primo)  not the whole meal. This makes it easy to enjoy a few bites of fresh pasta without feeling overly full.

Ozempic tip: You may feel full faster, so listen to your body and pace yourself. Enjoy a few bites, then pause as you may realize you’re already satisfied.

🧀 2. Savor, Don’t Rush

Italians dine slowly and deliberately. Meals are meant to be experienced, not rushed. This aligns perfectly with how Ozempic helps regulate appetite.

Try this: Focus on flavors, textures, and conversation. Slower eating gives your body time to register fullness.

🥗 3. Balance Your Plate

You’ll find plenty of Ozempic-friendly options in Italy:

  • Fresh vegetables (especially grilled or marinated)

  • Olive oil for healthy fats

  • Grilled seafood or lean meats

  • Legumes, beans, or lentils in soups

*Add these to your meal to balance out the carbs and prevent blood sugar spikes.

🍷 4. Yes, You Can Drink Wine, Just Moderately

A glass of wine with dinner is a staple in Italy. If your doctor allows it and you’re not experiencing nausea or dizziness from Ozempic, it’s usually fine to enjoy a glass.

Tip: Sip slowly and always have wine with food to minimize effects on blood sugar.

🍨 5. Pick One Daily Indulgence

Whether it’s a scoop of pistachio gelato in Florence or a tiramisu in Venice just give yourself permission to enjoy. But you don’t have to indulge every meal.

Ozempic’s appetite control can help you make mindful decisions. If you plan for one treat a day, you won’t feel like you’re missing out or overdoing it.

Bonus: Timing Your Medication

If you inject Ozempic weekly, try to plan your travel day and meals around it. It’s best to eat lightly after your dose. I always bring:

  • My injectable pen in a travel cooler

  • Light snacks like crackers, nuts, or bananas for sensitive stomach days

  • A printed list of my meds in Italian (and English!)
