If you’re heading to Seoul and want a place that’s energetic, fun, and full of things to do (and eat), you need to spend time in Myeongdong.
This is one of those areas where you don’t really need a plan—you just show up, walk around, and let it unfold. I’ve been there myself, and it’s one of the most exciting neighborhoods I explored in Seoul.
My Experience
The first thing I noticed was the energy. Bright lights, music, street vendors, locals, tourists—it all comes together in a way that feels busy but not overwhelming.
What I loved most is that you can go from shopping to eating to exploring all within a few steps. One minute you’re browsing skincare, the next you’re trying street food you’ve never even heard of.
And yes—this is where I had Korean Coconut Chicken, and I still think about it.

The Food Scene (This Alone Is Worth Going For)
Let’s be honest—food is a big reason to come here.
Myeongdong is known for its street food, and it’s everywhere. You’ll find:
Korean fried chicken (including the famous coconut chicken—crispy, slightly sweet, and completely addictive)
Skewers (meat, seafood, even cheese)
Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes)
Egg bread (warm, soft, slightly sweet) - This was so good!
Tornado potatoes (spiral-cut fried potatoes on a stick)
Fresh fruit cups and juices
Korean hotteok (sweet pancakes filled with syrup and nuts)
My tip: come hungry and try a little of everything. It’s part of the experience.

Shopping in Myeongdong
If you love shopping, this is one of the best spots in Seoul.
Korean skincare and beauty stores are everywhere
Many shops offer samples, which makes it fun to explore
There are also clothing stores, accessories, and souvenir shops
Even if you’re not big on shopping, it’s still fun to walk through and take it all in.

Things to Do Beyond Shopping & Food
Myeongdong isn’t just about eating and shopping, there are a few great spots to check out:
Myeongdong Cathedral – A beautiful, historic cathedral right in the middle of the area.
Street performances and entertainment in the evenings.
When to Go
Evening is the best time – that’s when the street food vendors are out and the area really comes alive
If you prefer a slower pace, go earlier in the day for shopping before the crowds build.

Why I Recommend It
As a travel advisor, I always look for places that give you a real feel for a destination and Myeongdong absolutely does that.
It’s:
Easy to navigate
Packed with experiences in one place
Great for all ages
Perfect for both first-time visitors and repeat travelers
And honestly, it’s just fun.
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning a trip to South Korea, make sure Myeongdong is on your itinerary, even if it’s just for one evening.
Between the food (especially that coconut chicken), the energy, and the variety of things to do, it’s one of those places you’ll remember long after your trip.
If you want help building a Seoul itinerary that balances cultural sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace with fun neighborhoods like this, I’d love to help you put it all together.
